Steven Tyler Has Hepatitis C
Monday, September 25, 2006 • (12) Comments • Tags: Bodies ,Celebrity ,Magazines ,Music ,News
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler has been secretly battling hepatitis C — a serious viral infection of the blood, often associated with dirty needles, that can lead to chronic liver disease.

But the 58-year-old recovering drug addict tells "Access Hollywood's" Nancy O'Dell that after a year of interferon treatments, "It is nonexistent in my bloodstream … where it's like a complete cure."

In an interview airing tomorrow night, Tyler says he was diagnosed three years ago but "I've had hepatitis C for a long time, asymptomatic.

"I've been pretty quiet about this," he says. "The band took a break about three years ago. … [My doctor] said now is the time, and it's 11 months of chemotherapy" — actually, interferon, which strengthens the immune system — "so I went on that, and it about killed me."

He added: "You know, it really hurt. It was a bad, bad period. I'm in AA, and I tried to go three, four, five months with nothing, and it about killed me.

"Hepatitis C is the one that, of all the people in this room, at least three have it and don't know it," Tyler says. "It's the silent killer. I may go on 'Oprah' and talk about this. I hope you don't mind me mentioning that."

i feel ya on that Steven! i was on interferon a little over 2 years ago for Crohn’s disease and it almost killed me too. after that i completely understood why people say that chemo is often worse than the disease…i felt about a million time sicker on chemo than i did on crohn’s. and it lowered my white count to the point where i caught a lot of nasty infections, including a near-fatal staph infection in my face as a result. plus my hair started to fall out *cry cry*, i was dizzy and tired all the time and was on disability from work for 2 months. but it eventually did work and i’ve been in remission for over 18 months now, so it worked…but i hope i never have to do that again! chronic disease is a bitch, but at least i won’t need a transplant like Steven might, and i might even be able to avoid surgery completely with a little luck.

scary shit! hang tough steven!

I love Steven, too. He is a totally cool MF’er! One of the coolest. I am glad to hear that all is well, but sorry to hear about all the struggles. That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Glad to hear you are well, too, Gambitgirl. Stay strong and positive.
