'Crash' was the unlikely winner at last night's (05.03.06) Oscars beating 'Brokeback Mountain' to the coveted Best Picture award.

The racial drama scooped the coveted prize, as well as two other accolades, ahead of the hotly-tipped gay cowboy movie - much to the shock of the
star-studded audience.

As 'Cash' - which contained a stellar cast, including Matt Dillon and Sandra Bullock - was announced as the winner, the film's clearly overjoyed cast and crew jumped out of their sits and joyously embraced each other. However, 'Brokeback Mountain', which had been nominated for eight Academy Awards, didn't go home empty-handed, riding off with three awards, including Best Director for Ang Lee, Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay. As he collected his award, Lee praised the movie's lead characters, Ennis and Jack, saying: "They taught all of us so much, not just about the gay men and women in our society but, just as importantly, about the greatness of love itself."

Despite his personal triumph, the film-maker did not hide his disappointment over losing out to 'Crash'. After the ceremony, he said: "I was a little shocked. We've been winning the whole season." 'Capote' star Philip Seymour Hoffman walked away with the Best Actor prize for his portrayal of celebrated author Truman Capote.

During his acceptance speech the emotional actor praised his mother for inspiring him to become an actor.

He said: "I'm overwhelmed, I'm really overwhelmed.

"Be proud, mom, because I'm proud of you, and we're here tonight, and it's so good."

As predicted, Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress Oscar for playing June Carter Cash in the Johnny cash biopic 'Walk the Line'.

Elsewhere, George Clooney, who was nominated in three categories, landed the Best Supporting Actor prize for 'Syriana' early on, while pregnant British
beauty Rachel Weisz scooped the Best Supporting Actress accolade for her performance in 'The Constant Gardner'.

Britney Spears is rumoured to be pregnant again.
The 'Toxic' singer was rushed to a Malibu hospital last week, reportedly
because her son, Sean Preston, was suffering from constipation.
However, an insider close to Britney claims the real reason she was taken to
hospital is because she is expecting another child from husband Kevin
Federline.
The source is quoted on website MSNBC as saying: "She was throwing up and
had stomach cramps.
"She's pregnant."
A spokeswoman for the sexy star has denied she is pregnant, saying: "It's
not true. She is not pregnant."
Earlier this month, Britney sparked speculation she is with child after
grabbing her less-than-flat stomach and shouting at shoppers in a Malibu
store: "That's right, number two!"
At the time, her friends were quoted as saying: "Britney is definitely
pregnant again.
"She's acting the same way she did when she was pregnant with her first
child."
Last week, Federline was spotted enjoying a day out with a sexy blonde -
increasing speculation his marriage to Britney is on the rocks.
The dancer-turned-singer was caught on camera getting close to French
actress Sandy Lakdar as they walked through Hollywood together.
A friend of Britney and Kevin said: "These pictures aren't going to help fix
their problems."



Jennifer Aniston had a nose job and liposuction before she was famous -
according to an old friend.
Actress Nancy Balbirer, who once shared a flat with the former 'Friends'
star, makes the claims in a new novel - believed to be based on the actress'
life.
The book's main character, named Jane, is described as a "famous sitcom
actress" in a show where friends live together.
In the tome, titled 'The Underminer: Or, the Best Friend Who Casually
Destroys Your Life', Jane complains of her Greek nose, before having plastic
surgery to correct it and also has hairline work.
Balbirer, 40, also claims Aniston - who has previously complained of her
Greek features - had her fired from 'Friends'.
However, Aniston's spokesperson has denied the star has ever had cosmetic
surgery, and said of Balbirer: "She sounds like an opportunist."



TV mobsters 'The Sopranos' are to be whacked.
The popular Mafia drama will end with an eight episode run on US TV next
January, according to the show's creator, David Chase.
However, Chase isn't ruling out a comeback - possibly on the big screen.
He said: "It may be that in two or three or four years I could be sitting
around and get an idea for a really great 'Sopranos' movie.
"I don't think that will happen. But if one morning somebody woke up and
said this would make a really good and concise 'Sopranos' story, I wouldn't
rule that out."
Meanwhile, the show's main star James Gandolfini has admitted he feels his
character - mob boss Tony Soprano - has run his course.
He said: "I think there's a place Tony knows that if he goes to, he's not
coming back - that would be to kill members of his own family.
"If you start killing family members, what's next?"
The Emmy-winning series has been an international success since its launch
on US TV channel HBO in 1999.



Mariah Carey has been hotly-tipped to star in new movie 'Tennessee' -
despite being lambasted for being a bad actress.
The pop diva - who famously failed to impress in her 2001 big screen debut
'Glitter' - has reportedly been lined up to play a waitress who joins two
brothers on a mission to find their long lost father.
Mariah, who was once named the third worst rock star/actor of all time, will
start shooting in New Mexico and Tennessee this spring if she wins the role.
Earlier this month, it was claimed the curvy songstress - who also appeared
in 2002's 'WiseGirls' with actress Mira Sorvino - insists on having popcorn
in her dressing room before she performs.
The star, who is famed for her outlandish backstage demands, reportedly
requests that bags of the sweet snack are available for her to much on
before and after her shows.
A source close to her said: "When she was promoting her last single in the
UK, she asked for Butterkist toffee popcorn in her dressing room."



Madonna is "strong again" after breaking nine bones in a horse riding
accident last year.
The star fell off her mount at her country home on her birthday last August
(05.08.05), cracking a number of ribs, breaking her collarbone and her hand.
Madonna admits the fall left her shaken up and worried she would not be able
to perform or dance on stage again.
She said: "2005 was a very tumultuous year.
"Forget about riding a horse again - I didn't know if I was going to be able
to dance again."
She added: "When I shot the video for 'Hung Up', none of the bones had gone
together.
"Pharmaceuticals and my will got me through the shoot. I felt so much joy
just to have my body back and to feel strong again."
The 'Sorry' singer also revealed how she had to stop doing yoga while her
shoulder was healing.
She told Harpers Bazaar magazine: "I used to be a freak about doing yoga,
but I had to do a lot of Pilates to rehab my shoulder joint and get the use
of my arm back.
"My Pilates instructor was a dancer, so my workouts became much more
ballet-oriented, rather than the visceral, gymnastic, Ashtanga yoga thing."



Nicole Kidman has denied claims she is getting married.
The stunning actress has been at the centre of speculation for weeks she is
to tie the knot with musician lover Keith Urban some time in March.
The couple, who reportedly got engaged at Christmas, were even rumoured to
have started looking at chapels in the actress' native Australia after
deciding on a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony.
Kidman's publicist, Wendy Day, has now refuted the claims insisting she
knows nothing about the pair's proposed nuptials.
Day said: "The story is nonsense. I know of no wedding. I know of no wedding
date. I know of no wedding plans."
Earlier this month, Kidman finally went public with her relationship with
Urban - by holding hands with him at the Grammy awards.
The screen beauty - who has never admitted she is romancing the country
star - made no attempt to hide her feelings at the prestigious music awards

Eva Longoria is desperate for a baby.
The 'Desperate Housewives' star, who plays Gabrielle Solis on the hit show,
says she would love to start a family with boyfriend American basketball
star Tony Parker.

on the show until I am in real life. What if I was pregnant this year in the
show and then pregnant next year in real life? So when I get married and get
pregnant, hopefully Gabrielle will get pregnant too."

Hilary Swank has signed a three-year contract to be the face of Guerlain's
new perfume.
The Oscar-winning beauty will be both the inspiration and the spokeswoman
for the beauty company's new fragrance.
They said they picked the 'Million Dollar Baby' star because she is a
"radiant and natural beauty" who is different to most Hollywood celebrities.
Guerlain said in a statement: "Her background of always opting for the more
challenging and risky roles, coupled with her warm and genuine personality -
a far cry from the usual Hollywood mould - were all factors that made her an
obvious choice for Guerlain."
Earlier this year, Swank split from husband Chad Lowe.
The pair - who had been plagued by rumours their relationship was on the
rocks for months - called time on their marriage eight years after tying the
knot.
But Swank, 31, is still hopeful they may reconcile.

George Michael has been arrested over alleged drugs offences after being
found slumped over the steering wheel of his car.

Police arrested the 42-year-old singer in London's West End in the early
hours of Sunday morning (02.26.06).

A police spokesman revealed: "We were called by a member of the public to a
man seen slumped over the steering wheel of a car on the street close to
Hyde Park Corner.

"A search of the man revealed what was believed to be controlled
substances."

Michael was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs, including
cannabis and GHB, a recreational substance popular with clubbers, and has
been released on bail.

The 'Careless Whisper' singer was also initially arrested on suspicion of
being unfit to drive, but police dropped the charge after he was examined by
a doctor.

According to reports, officers also found a stash of pornographic material,
sex toys and sex masks in the boot of the vehicle.

This is not Michael's first public brush with the law.

In 1998, he was arrested in Los Angeles for lewd conduct after indecently
exposing himself to an undercover police officer in a public toilet.

The incident prompted him to admit he was gay, ending years of speculation
about his sexuality.

'Desperate Housewives' star Eva Longoria admits she has gained weight since falling in love. The gorgeous 30-year-old actress admits she has piled on a few pounds since she first landed a role on the hit show because she is in the comfort zone with boyfriend basketball star Tony Parker. Eva, who plays Gabrielle Solis in the series, first realised she had plumped up after she struggled to fit into her character's dresses.

She told Britain's Now magazine: "I'm in love and I don't need to try anymore. I was getting upset that nothing would fit. I thought the costume designers were doing it because they wanted Gabrielle to be sexier."

'Goodfellas' star Joe Pesci will not be charged after allegedly punching a fan in the face. The star reportedly hit out when the stranger tried to take a picture of him in a car park in Boca Raton, Florida in January (06). Assistant State Attorney Jill Estey Richstone from Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office said they would not be taking it further because there was no likelihood of conviction.

In a statement, Richstone wrote: "The investigating officer was unable to determine who the primary aggressor was and there are no independent witnesses to the incident."

24-year-old Juan Carlos Montenegro claimed Pesci punched him on Jan. 22 after he took a picture of the star, despite being told not to. According to the police report, the Oscar-nominated star claimed he tried to swat away the camera and inadvertently hit the student's face after he put his arm around the actor's neck and shoulders in a pose for a picture. According to the State Attorney's Office, if Pesci had been prosecuted, he could have faced a misdemeanor battery charge punishable by up to a year in jail.



Keira Knightley has been photographed frolicking on a beach with 'Pride & Prejudice' co-star Rupert Friend - sparking rumours they are dating. The sexy actress looked relaxed and happy as she cuddled up to the actor during a break in the Bahamas. At one point, the couple even kissed as they cavorted in the surf.

The 60-year-old - who plays Inspector Clouseau in a new Pink Panther film - also revealed he took French lessons to try and perfect the accent for the movie. The comic star got so used to speaking with a French voice he even slipped into character when he was off set.

Elle Macpherson's split is getting messy. The supermodel broke up with partner Arky Busson - the father of her two sons, Flynn,7, and 2-year-old Aurelius Cy - last summer.

Pierce Brosnan has admitted he'd love to play James Bond again. The heartthrob actor was ditched after playing the dashing spy in four movies - but says he'd love to be 007 again if the new Bond, Daniel Craig, doesn't work out.

He told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "If such a scenario arose, I would jump at it."

Brosnan also warned Craig - who reportedly lost two teeth while filming fight scenes for 'Casino Royale' - he should be prepared to get injured.

He said: "It never made it in to the papers, but I've had my face sliced open by a stuntman and a knee injury. But it's all part and parcel of being Bond.

"I'm afraid Daniel will have to face a lot more real-life injuries."

Last year, Brosnan revealed he was in shock for 24 hours after being axed as the sauce spy. The handsome actor said at the time: "It's over, it's over, it is absolutely over!

"It was their prerogative to change their minds. They can do it! It was disappointing. It was surprising. But I accepted the knowledge after 24 hours of being in shock."



Hugh Grant allegedly kicked a photographer in the butt after he refused to stop taking his picture. The heartthrob actor is also said to have hit the shutterbug with a folder and swore at him during the incident in New York's Central Park on Tuesday(02.21.06). The British star had been walking by himself when the paparazzo appeared and started taking photographs.

Hugh pulled out his mobile phone and took a picture of the snapper, saying:

"How do you like it, mate?"

Former New York Daily News spokesman Ken Frydman - who witnessed the incident - said the photographer kept taking photos. The furious actor then called him a "p***y" and bashed him with a manila folder.

Frydman said: "The photographer kept smirking at him. He said, 'I don't know what you're so mad about'. "

Hugh is then said to have shouted: "You're invading my privacy. This is your last warning, you c**t."

Frydman added: "The photographer kept taunting him. That's when Grant kicked him in the butt. Not hard - he was just trying to shove him away."

The man, who has not been identified, kept taking pictures as Hugh stormed off.



The maid who stole from Robert De Niro has been jailed for up to three years. A judge said Lucyna Turyk-Wawrynowicz had been "cleaning out" her celebrity employers' valuables while tidying their homes.

Before sentencing, the 35-year-old, said through an interpreter: "I would like the judge to allow me to go home to Poland."

She told the court her sister had died recently, leaving several young children and added:

"They have no one to take care of them."

However, State Supreme Court Justice Renee White ignored her pleas and jailed her, saying: "During your work as a housekeeper, a job that involves trust, you violated the trust of five individuals by stealing significant property from these individuals.

"You worked not just by cleaning and dusting, but by cleaning out the property of the various employers you worked for."

Turyk-Wawrynowicz had previously admitted stealing shoes and $95,500 worth of jewellery from De Niro's wife, Grace Hightower; and took leather jackets and a camera from another client, actress Candice Bergen. The maid also stole the identity of a now-13-year-old girl, and using the youngster's Social Security number to get residency and work papers, which she could not have gotten as an illegal alien.

Angry James Bond fans have started an online petition urging movie goers to boycott new film 'Casino Royale' - in protest against Daniel Craig. The group of disgruntled 007 enthusiasts have are asking people to log on to website www.craignotbond.com and voice their displeasure at the decision to replace Pierce Brosnan with the hunky British star.

A statement on the site reads: "EON Productions angered fans around the world when they fired Pierce Brosnan at the height of his popularity.

"To add insult to injury, EON cast a short, blond, odd-looking Daniel Craig in the role of Bond.

"Craig, described by The New York Times as having a 'pale, flattened face and large, fleshy ears' is a terrible choice for Bond. If EON Productions and Sony Pictures will not accept they've made a big mistake, then Bond fans promise to boycott 'Casino Royale!'"

The website also claims Brosnan, who publicly voiced his displeasure at being axed from the role, was only replaced because producers were too cheap to pay the actor's requested pay increase. Since shooting started the movie has been beset by problems. Craig was left red-faced after admitting he couldn't drive Bond's classic Aston Martin DB5 because he can't use manual gears. The actor, who has previously confessed he is scared of guns, also lost two teeth at the weekend when a stunt went wrong.



Three tracks from the long-awaited Guns 'N' Roses comeback album have been leaked onto the internet. The songs allegedly from 'Chinese Democracy', the record which original band member Axl Rose has been working on for a decade, surfaced on the web last week. Fans also sent the tracks to a number of US radio stations who had them in heavy rotation by Monday night (02.20.06). The band's manager, Merck Mercuriadis, has now ordered the sites to remove the links immediately.

Fans say the tracks - 'Better', 'There Was A Time', 'Estranged' and 'IRS' - take a different direction from Rose's traditional rock style. Meanwhile, Lisa Reed, wife of keyboard player Dizzy Reed, said on her husband's web site: "All signs point to the album getting closer and closer."

She also pleaded with fans not to leak the rest of the album, adding: "It's like shaking all your Christmas presents on the 23rd of December and figuring out what they are."

Several top music festivals, including the Rock in Rio-Lisboa and the NovaRock festival in Austria, have reportedly booked Guns 'N' Roses to play in May and June, respectively.



Paris Hilton is desperate to land the part of Mother Teresa in an upcoming film. The sexy socialite has expressed her delight, at being short-listed for the saintly role in Indian director T. Rajeevnath's proposed film. Paris has reportedly discussed the project with the acclaimed film-maker and
has assured him she is very interested.

Rajeevnath said during a late-night TV interview: "This certainly is good news. What made me happy was that she said she would try to convince me she could handle the role. My agents are working out a time slot for a meeting with her."

Rajeevnath got the idea to cast Paris in the unlikely role after being impressed by her when she refused to strip off for Playboy magazine. Since news surfaced about the biopic, the 54-year-old director has been approached by several international production houses interested in funding the film.

He said: "I have had a mail from the agents of Warner Brothers and several others, expressing their desire to associate with the proposed film."

The English language movie will be mainly shot in West Bengal, where Mother Teresa spent most of her life helping the poor.

Daniel Craig stunned James Bond bosses when he couldn't drive 007's classic car. Filmmakers had transported Bond's original Aston Martin DB5 to the Bahamas to shoot new movie 'Casino Royale'. But the star confessed he didn't have a license to drive the manual car, which Sean Connery drove when he played the dashing spy.

The 39-year-old reportedly said: "Er. I don't do gears."

An insider is quoted in Britain's Daily Star newspaper as saying: "They've started shooting here and are using the old DB5, which is absolutely sensational. It was shipped over and was ready to go but then we found out he can't drive a manual car.

"So we have had to adapt it so it's like an automatic. You don't expect that with James Bond, to be honest."

Last year, Craig admitted he is struggling to overcome his biggest fear to play Bond - he's terrified of guns. The star will have to handle weapons in the film but said he was left petrified after seeing a real life bullet wound.

He said at the time: "I hate handguns. They are used to shoot people and as long as they are around, people will shoot each other.
"I've seen a bullet wound and it was a mess."

He also had an open sore in his left nostril - an alleged sign of cocaine rot. Fans who attended the concert were shocked at Doherty's appearance.

One told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "It looked awful. There were a lot of people shocked that he turned up in such a state.
"The man is a mess. Maybe it's time he was locked up for his own good."

Doherty recently vowed to quit drugs.

He said: "I'm not taking anymore drugs. I've just been helped.
"If I'm on a drug rehabilitation requirement and being tested, there is no way round it."

Brad Pitt has denied reports he has agreed a multi-million pound divorce deal with Jennifer Aniston. Madonna has had oxygen machines installed at both of her British homes - to give her energy.
The pop diva was using the high-tech machines to give herself oxygen facials, which she says help her maintain a porcelain doll-like complexion.
But she later discovered inhaling the pure air helped reduce her tiredness. The jet-setting singer also believes breathing oxygen helps her beat jetlag.

She told a German magazine:

"They're great.

"You just lie down for ten minutes and inhale."

Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, has confirmed the star's love of the unusual treatment.

She said:

"She loves the machine. It's phenomenal. I want to try it myself."

Last month, Madonna sparked health fears after friends claimed she was looking skinny and exhausted.

The 47-year-old's pals were reportedly worried she was taking her punishing exercise regime too far - and was jeopardising her health.
