The heartthrob actor beat celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to take the top spot in the poll, conducted by website imdb.com - the InternationalMovie Database.
The website revealed the handsome 42-year-old was more searched for than any other star in 2005 - including Jennifer Aniston and Tom Cruise, who were frequently in the news over the last 12 months.
Last year, Depp credited his two children and partner Vanessa Paradis for his success.
The former hellraiser, who was once renowned for his partying lifestyle and fondness for trashing hotel rooms, claimed becoming a father put a stop to
his wild ways.
He said: "I'd go to functions and I literally had to be drunk to be able to get through it. I guess I was trying not to feel anything."
But Depp said as soon as he had children with his singer Paradis, his desire to drink himself into a stupor vanished.
He explained: "All of a sudden I went 'f**k it'. I realised there was nothing anyone could do to me anymore."
