Daryl Hannah has been arrested during a protest to save a public garden in
Los Angeles.
The actress - who shot to fame as Madison the mermaid in popular 80s film
‘Splash’ - was among a number of campaigners taken into custody during the
demonstration in South Central on Tuesday (06.13.06).
Minutes before her arrest, Hannah - who had spent three weeks in a tree on
the site - said: “I’m planning on holding my position. I’m very confident
this is the morally right thing to do.”
The 14-acre Central Urban Garden - which is managed by immigrant farmers who
grow fruit and vegetables there - is due to be bulldozed by developers.
Alberto Tlatoa - who has regularly used the site for the last eight years -
said: “This project is fundamental. It’s a safe haven for the community, a
place for the elderly to come, and it’s an important source of food for many
low-income families.”
Hannah is not the only star to have joined campaigners on-site.
‘Titanic’ actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlie Sheen and ‘The Rock’ star Ed
Harris have all given their support to the fight to save the project.
