Boxer Vernon Forrest Killed - Shot 12 Times In The Back

Former world champion boxer Vernon Forrest has been killed during a robbery at a gas station in Atlanta, Georgia.

The sports star was caught up in the heist at a service station on Saturday night July 25th when a group of men robbed him at gunpoint while he was putting air into the tires of his Jaguar sports car.

He was then shot in the back nearly a dozen times as he chased one of the thieves.

Forrest was also armed and exchanged fire with his assailants, according to Atlanta police spokesman Keith Meadow.

The star, 38, was traveling with his girlfriend's 11-year-old son, who was in the car at time of the attack and was able to give a description of the robbers to cops.

Forrest competed for the U.S. in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain before turning professional, winning the International Boxing Federation welterweight title in 2001 and becoming the World Boxing Council's middleweight champion.

He finished his career with a record of 41 wins, three losses and 29 knockouts.

Leann Rimes broke her silence by telling gig-goers at the Deer Valley Music Festival in Utah she's nursing a "broken heart" following reports she's split from husband Dean Sheremet. During her performance, Rimes stopped and told the crowd about her heart-ache: "It is inevitable that sometimes in a relationship, you will have your heart broken. Jailed music producer Phil Spector has received a note from killer Charles Manson. Phil's wife Rachelle Spector told the New York Post, "A guard brought Philip a note from Manson, who said he wanted him to come over to his (cell). He said he considers Phillip the greatest producer who ever lived. It was creepy. Phillip didn't respond."

Spector's publicist Hal Lifson added, "I think Manson wants to glean some musical advice from Phil, who was a 60s music god with his Wall of Sound.

"But Phil's like, 'I used to pick up the phone and it was John Lennon or Celine Dion or Tina Turner, and now Charles Manson is trying to get a hold of me."
