The pair - who were believed to have reunited following Chris' alleged
assault of the 'Umbrella' singer last month - have decided to spend time
apart to re-evaluate their turbulent relationship.
A source said: "Chris and Rihanna are on opposite coasts right now. They are
taking a break."
Last week, Rihanna flew to New York where she enjoyed a meal out with her
mentor Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce Knowles at the Spotted Pig restaurant. She
was also spotted having dinner with friends at eatery Da Silvano.
Chris remained in Los Angeles, where he has been working on his new album.
A source said: "He's just putting ideas down for some songs he wrote. He
needs to feel like he's moving forward."
Chris has been charged with felony assault and making criminal threats
following his altercation with Rihanna in his rented silver Lamborghini.
Despite splitting in the wake of the alleged attack, the pair reunited after

Brian, 35, is also an actor and has regularly appeared on TV show
'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'.
The couple - who showed their love for each other by getting tattoos - met
in 2004 before getting engaged in 2006.
Only a few months ago, Megan was still talking about marriage.
She said: "It's not going to be a big wedding. I'm not one of those girls -
If it happens, it will be very low-key and quick and unplanned."
Rumors their romance was on the rocks were sparked in January, when Megan
attended the Golden Globes alone.
The 22-year-old beauty said: "Brian doesn't want to be here. He doesn't want
to be my date. He's a man. He has an ego. I think he's probably working on
music. I don't think he cares."
Despite an amicable split from fiance Ross McCall earlier this month, neither party can bear to be separated from their boxer Mona.
Jennifer is even believed to be resorting to dirty tricks to win the pooch's loyalties.
A source revealed to the New York Daily News newspaper: "Jennifer is even attempting to change Mona's name so that when Ross calls, the dog won't come."
Jennifer has previously revealed the couple put another of their dogs, cavalier King Charles spaniel Charlie, on anti-depressant drug Prozac after the pet began behaving oddly.
She said: "Charlie started doing this weird, like, intense licking thing, where she would, like, lick the air. She's got an anxiety disorder, so they put her on Prozac. Now, she's as happy as can be."
John Ritchie is pleased his son and the singer have parted ways, and is even
more delighted Madonna is distracting herself with "lots of boyfriends"
because "she won't be looking for him".
The protective father told In Touch Weekly magazine: "The worst thing would
be if they reconciled."
While Guy’s dad welcomes the split, he says relations between the pair are
amicable and all they care about is the happiness of the children they raise
together - 12-year-old Lourdes, eight-year-old Rocco and David, three.
He said: "There are no big arguments between them. All they discuss is the

begged them not to be "mean".
Guy was seen entering his ex-wife Madonna's New York apartment on Tuesday
(01.13.09) sparking rumors of a reconciliation, but the pair reportedly
only met to placate 12-year-old Lourdes.
A source said: "They're working very hard to have an amicable divorce,
because Lourdes came to them begging, 'Please don't be mean to each other.'
Then she told them she wanted everything to be as friendly as possible."
The couple - who announced they were separating after nearly eight years of
marriage last October - are now determined to make their separation as easy
as possible for the sake of Lourdes, their eight-year-old son Rocco and
adopted son David Banda, three.
The source added to the New York Daily News newspaper: "Madonna and Guy are
getting along better than they have in over a year. Their separation has had
a positive effect on their relationship as parents."
Madonna has sought support from friends who follow Kabbalah, a mystical
off-shoot of Judaism, who are also said to be behind the improved relations
between her and Guy.
A friend of the 50-year-old singer's revealed: "Kabbalah doesn't encourage
divorce. So her friends in the religion are pushing for them to reunite or,
at the very least, maintain a solid friendship."
