Boy George has been ordered to pick up litter on the streets New York.

The Culture Club frontman, real name George O'Dowd, will carry out five days
court-ordered community service with New York's sanitation department later
this month.

The punishment comes after police discovered cocaine at the singer's
Manhattan home after he falsely claimed his apartment had been broken into
last October.

On hearing his sentence earlier this year, George joked "I've always been a
scrubber", and promised to show up wearing "something loud".

The 'Karma Chameleon' singer has been ordered to return to court on August
14 to pick up a shovel, broom, gloves and plastic bags in preparation for
his street cleaning duty.

He will have to work in temperatures that are expected to soar over 40C.
New York sanitation department spokesman Vito Turson said: "This is the
epitome of community service. It's not like he's going to be working in an
air-conditioned office."

George had hoped to fulfil his community service with an AIDS fundraising
concert and his lawyer had predicted the sentence would be "raking leaves in
the park".
