Ozzy Osbourne is furious with a Dakota sheriff for using his name in a sting operation to catch wanted criminals.
The angry rocker is outraged that Sheriff Paul D. Laney sent invitations to 500 people with outstanding arrest warrants offering them the chance to meet Ozzy at a party. More than 30 attended the bogus event and were arrested.
Ozzy said: "Instead of holding a press conference to pat himself on the back, Sheriff Laney should be apologizing to me for using my name in connection with these arrests.
"It is insulting to me and to my audience and it shows how lazy this particular sheriff is when it comes to doing his job."
The Cass County sheriff thought up the scheme when he learned Ozzy was playing a concert in nearby Fargo.
Sheriff Laney said: "We meant no disrespect toward Mr Osbourne or his show.
"What we did was a very creative law enforcement technique to lure individuals who had active criminal warrants to come to us."

i think Ozzy may only have a case if the Sheriff used his image without permission to lure the criminals in.
but this is not lazy on the sheriff’s part. police departments for YEARS have been using this sort of “hey you won X, come pick it up here at Y date” scheme to trick criminals into showing up to collect a prize only to be arrested. it’s pretty effective way to catch the crooks if you trick them into coming to you, they nabbed 30 in 1 day, which probably would’ve taken week if they had to chase them all over town…plus the crooks usually show up to collect their new TV, hawaiian vacation, etc. without guns, so it’s safer for law enforcement than kicking in doors.

There is no way in hell that using any famous person’s name to catch criminals is legal! What BS, Ozzy should sue and donate the money he wins to a charity. Go ahead and offer a Hawaiian vacation or whatever else. But leave the celebrities out of it; they don’t need some crazy getting out of jail and tracking them down to murder their asses.

Yea, fuck that guy.. So what if he’s making it safe for other officers involved so that they get another chance to go home to their families. Fuck him for getting a bunch of criminals off the streets. God forbid A super rich celebrity is “inconvenienced” by this in some way because we all know Ozzy gives two shits about you and me.

Ozzy should be glad that he thought of his name, the dude could’ve said come and meet pee wee herman. I think he’s pissed because only 30+ people showed up to see “him”.

I mean I could understand Ozzy being pissed if it were some local record store or something trying to use his name to pull in some customers for a sale or something.. But to be pissed off at some cops because they came up with a clever way to get some criminals off the streets while minimizing the risks to themselves and others is just good old fashion wankery.. My guess is that he’s pissed because he didn’t get any $ out of it. Typical celebs though..

Criminal record or not, that is entrapment on every level. Does anyone else remember the Simpsons episode where Chief Wiggum and staff sent out notifications of winning a free boat and to come to a particular address? Homer went and was arrested?? What lazy P.O.S.’ that police department is. I think Ozzy should sue them. If they had their mailing address, why couldn’t they just go and arrest them?

They could, but It would probably be more dangerous that way.. Catch them off guard and a location YOU choose and you minimize the risks. It’s pretty simple really and is done quite often. Ozzy would be the only one who looks like a jackass if he decides to sue or something.. Not that he doesn’t look like a jackass normally.

azure…entrapment is when “A person is ‘entrapped’ when he is induced or persuaded by law enforcement officers or their agents to commit a crime that he had no previous intent to commit; and the law as a matter of policy forbids conviction in such a case.”
tricking them into showing up someplace to be arrested isn’t entrapment b/c the arrestee wasn’t persuaded to COMMIT A CRIME by this ruse. they were simply persuaded to show up at a certain place at a certain time, making it easier to arrest them.
law enforcement has been doing this for YEARS, and it’s always been held up as legal to trick a wanted criminal into being someplace at a known time to catch them. they have even said they will bring them a TV they won from some raffle and the criminal says they will be home at 5pm to have the TV delivered…and the cops show up with an empty tv box and arrest the moron when they answer the door.
