Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, appears in a TV ad for a Senate candidate who supports stem-cell research, and the severe shaking and stiffness associated with the disease are evident in his movements. But conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh has accused the actor of exaggerating his symptoms for the camera.
Commenting on Fox's commercial for Missouri Senate challenger Claire McCaskill, Limbaugh said on his syndicated radio program Tuesday, "He is moving around and shaking, and it is purely an act."
Limbaugh later said on the show, "If this was not an act, then I apologize." He also went on to say, however, that Fox is allowing his illness to be exploited.
Why would Michael J. Fox pretend to have a serious disease???? That's so ridiculous - I always loved Michael J. Fox and this is clearly insulting.

and MJ Fox is freaking 45 years old and a very intelligent person. he’s not some sort of simpletone, he CHOSE to use the shocking image of his Parkinson’s to make a point about how devastating this disease is and how stem cell research can help. he’s not being controlled by anyone, he’s a grown damn man making a stand about something important to him. dismissing it as him “being exploited” is just a knee jerk reaction b/c Rush knows this image is a very effective tool for making a point about stem cell research.

Most people would be humiliated to go on tv and show what is happening to them. Michael probably helped people with the disease maybe see a little bit of hope, you know? I don’t think Rush is off on this one. I feel for Fox and his ailment, but he was obviously NOT taking his meds when they filmed the commercial. Seems shady to me. They interviewed Fox later, and it was so obvious that he was ON his med - not even half the movement and shaking.
I also KNOW someone with the disease, and they are ashamed that Fox was USED like that. Don’t jump on Rush for pointing out the truth.

Here in canuck-ville, our previous PM, Jean Chretien, was similarily attacked by the opposition party during elections. They aired a commercial of him speaking that emphasized the fact Jean’s face is partially paralyzed, and asked if the public wanted someone who looked like that representing them (I shit you not). As a DIRECT result the Liberals won by a LANDSLIDE.

I don’t see what difference it makes if he didn’t take his meds or not, rush shouldn’t have opened his big mouth about something he probably doesn’t care about. My grandmother has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years now and let me tell you, my whole family supports MJF 100%, he has helped bring public attention to this horrible disease. stsimons, what the effin hell makes you accuse him of not taking his meds, have you ever had personal experience with this disease before?!? I LIVE with my grandmother, we have no choice, she cannot live on her own, and let me tell you, when she is nervous or excited she will shake A LOT more than usual, that’s just what happens! and i’m sorry to tell you sharnel, but there is VERY VERY little chance he will ever get better without new research, because this disease just gets worse and worse and WORSE! Some people mentioned this guy used to be a drug addict? well, in bio psych I learned that people who take extacy or smoke marijuana A LOT are at a very high risk of developing Parkinson’s disease… this is very recent research findings and a reason why there are all of a sudden new companies trying to make new meds for this disease because a lot of people from the 70’s and onwards (i.e. big weed and extacy times) will start being diagnosed with this stupid disease! (cha-ching) I usually wouldn’t wish this on my worst enimies, but after what this son of a b said, I really hope he gets what he deserves. I may sound really harsh, but like I said, this is really personal for me.
There are people with MANY types of diseases that can’t afford the treatments…diseases that cost FAR more than Parkinson’s to treat. Where are the fundraisers/charities for this disease and why does the gov’t constantly have to FUND everything?
And did any of you see the interview of MJF? I’m not saying he was faking it, but he was USED. There are other conditions that are HORRIFIC without the outward signs - why aren’t they also acting on legislation to help these people too? Because it’s not about MJF OR Parkinsons. Michael moves that way all the time, look at Denis Leary’s Roast, same EXACT movements. Also, the government doesn’t have to fund everything…that is why people go in front of congress to try and get funding for research for their diseases, or why there are charities to raise money for research…because the government does not fund everything. Also if you look I am SURE you can find charities for other diseases, just google them. Michael isn’t looking for legislation to just help those with parkinsons, he is looking for legislation to allow stem cell research that can be used to find cures for all types of diseases (cancer, lyme disease, alzeihmers, etc).

...MJF is an American citizen. He was born in Canada, so he has dual-citizenship. I’ve heard him say in an interview that he is very proud to call himself an American. I’d be more proud of my Canuck-heritage, but, you go Mikey.

...yeah, you can’t win for losing. However sad it is, I’m sure the millions who suffer from this horrendous disease are thankful they have a spokes-person like MJF who is willing to put up with the likes of RL and to put himself out there to raise awareness. MJF seems like the sort of man who probably believes he was afflicted with his illness so that he would be instrumental in the fight for a cure. IMO, his life-work has become far more important than when he was solely an entertainer…
